CHRONOLOGICAL BACKGROUNDER

OF POLAVARAM PROJECT 

  1. Original conceptualisation of project      by the then Madras Presidency  - July, 1941

 

  1. First survey of the project by Diwan Bahadur Venkata Krishna Iyer -  Sep'1942

 

  1. Preliminary investigation was taken up and the project was named as Ramapada Sagar (then its full reservoir level was proposed at 170 ft)           - Oct'1942                                                        

   4.    Another survey was conducted and height was proposed at 208 ft      -1944   

 

  1. A detailed investigation was done and it was proposed to keep height at 198 ft in the first phase and 208 ft in the second and final phase  1946-47

 

  1. Experts committee lead by then chief engineer N.Govindaraya Aiyangar decided to go for the two phase  project.  -1947

 

  1. Sir SV Rama Murthy proposed a Ramapadasagar scheme with 130 mts dam height and a 1500 MW.of power generation capacity, but it was not pursued due to geological reasons     -  1951   

 

  1. A technical committee headed by AC Mitra recommended a barrage at Polavaram to irrigate uplands    -1965

 

  1. Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal was formed   - April 1969

 

  1. AP government named the project as Polavaram and made a case before the tribunal for river control work at Polavaram   -1969

 

  1. AP presented a project report for Polavaram barrage with 145 ft height dam and two canals   -1970

 

  1. AP submitted another project report to the Central Water Commission for construction of earth-cum-rock fill dam at 150 ft height      -1978

                                                   

  1. Inter-state agreements with Karnataka, Maharashtra, MP and Orissa  with a dam height of 150 ft    - Aug 4,  1978  - July 11, 1979   -April 2,1980

                                                                                                                    

  1. Agreements placed before the Godavari Water Dispute Tribuna and finalised.      -   3.4.1980

 

  1. Detailed Project Report of Polavaram project completed in       1985 and submitted to the CWC in 1987

 

  1. R&R reports prepared through Centre for Evaluation of Socio
    Economic Studies.

  1. EIA -EMP prepared by Environment Protection Training &
    Research Institute based on data of 1996.
       - 2002

 

  1. EIA-EMP updated by M/s AFC ltd, Hyderabad during 2005
    submitted to MEF.

   34. Central Empowered Committee (CEC) of Supreme Court advises AP government to stop  works of the project when it heard objections raised by tribal rights activists and environmentalists                 27.4.2006   

 

   35. AP Government complies with CEC suggestion and stops the project works                                                                                                                          -30.4. 2006

   36. Central Wildlife board gives clearance                                            10.7. 2006
